It’s a tough truth that a business not moving forward is not sustainable in the long run. If your business has plateaued, it might carry on as it is for many years. Ultimately though, if you stand still while your competitors develop and innovate around you, the lifespan of your business will be limited.
So, assuming you have ambitions to move forward, what’s stopping you from taking your business to the next level?
It’s a question that presupposes you have a clear vision of what the ‘next level’ looks like. This is subjective and might mean very different things to different people. It may, for example, equate to making more profit, moving business online, breaking into a new market, being less stressed, having the opportunity to take more time out – or any number of other business or personal goals.
Only when you’ve determined what the next level might look like for you can you begin to work out how you’re going to get there and how you’re going to overcome any obstacles that may be in your way.
But when you’re caught up in the day-to-day detail of running your business, it can be difficult to see the forest for the trees. Just carrying on isn’t the solution. Leadership coach Marshall Goldsmith encapsulated it neatly in the title of his book, ‘What Got You Here Won’t Get You There’.
The fact is that every entrepreneur will find themselves bumping up against a ‘glass ceiling’ from time to time. It may seem like an insurmountable issue limiting further development, but as ActionCOACH Rob Pickering will explain in our November workshop, these barriers are usually artificial constraints that business owners impose on themselves. Finding ways through them is a logical process that anyone can learn.
Rob says: “If the momentum of a business slows down or stops, it’s usually because a resource limit has been reached. The limit might be in physical resources such as cash or space. Or it may be in less tangible resources such as the skills and knowledge residing in the business owner and their team.
All these things are fixable. Unlocking what’s blocking your way through to the next level might involve moving to new premises, raising capital, investing in IT, creating a new website, upskilling yourself or your workforce or something else entirely. But until you address the issue, the business cannot move forward.”
Who Is It For?
Whatever stage your business is at, if you think it might be time to shift up a gear, How to Take Your Business to the Next Level is for you. You may be ambitious for growth but frustrated by challenges you can’t see your way around, or you may know your business has more potential but be unsure how to realise it.
What Will You Learn?
This face-to-face workshop will be fully interactive and packed with practical take-aways to help you move your business forward. Rob will show you how to open your mind to visualise what your ‘next level’ might look like. And he will help you get clarity on the steps you need to take to get there.
By the end of the morning, you will:
- Know why every business owner needs to regularly ask themselves what the next level looks like
- Be clear about what the next level might mean for you
- Have identified any physical or strategic limitations that may be in your way
- Understand why any constraints you see are artificial
- Recognise that mindset and self-belief are the biggest keys to breaking through any barriers
Rob will be keeping things jargon-free to ensure his presentation is accessible to everyone, and he’s promised no PowerPoint (!). There will be plenty of time to ask questions and network with other local business owners in the room.
